Arrivederci is a 3D animated short of a pop-up book, which explores four different
locations in Italy. It illustrates the story of a girl who traveled all around Italy and
created a detailed pop-up book after coming home. Arrivederci, which translates
to “until we meet again,” showcases her memories in Venice, Bari, San Gimignano,
and Milan, four cities that represent four of the diverse regions of Italy.
Inspiration
Here is some inspiration for the crafty, watercolor style I wanted to achieve. Watercolor
painting is one of my favorite creative mediums, so my goal was to translate that
experience into a 3D animation.
References
Here are some references for the locations I chose: Venice, Bari, San Gimignano, and Milan.
Concept
Here is a selection of concept drawings I made in the ideation stage of this project.
Modeling
I used Autodesk Maya to model the 3D assets.
Texturing
I painted all of my watercolor paper textures in Procreate, and textured the remaining
models in Substance Painter and Photoshop. Many of my textures included hand-drawn
alpha maps, such as the plant textures shown below.
